Thanks for the memories, Marketplace!

I finished my internship with Marketplace in December. For four months I did a lot of running around the city to tape sync or snap photos, I set up guests in the studio and I found sources and sounds for stories. I even narrated a quote from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for Scott Tong’s story about fracking! (Go to 2:20).

My last story focused on how bike-shares reach low-income populations. Cities around the country are starting bike-share programs or increasing the number of stations or bikes at stations. But the majority of riders are young, highly educated white males. I talked to Capital Bikeshare (D.C.) and Citi Bike (New York) representatives and looked into income data. I wanted to compare the density of bike-share stations with household income, so I embedded a few maps and Census data in the story.

I don’t think this will be my last stint with radio. I find too much success in sharing stories through audio. Who knows, maybe I’ll start a podcast one of these days — to challenge myself and learn more.
