OutWrite 2018 is right around the corner

Since last year, I’ve been helping to plan OutWrite, D.C.’s LGBTQIA+ literary festival, which happens annually August 3-5. Dave Ring, the OutWrite co-chair, brought me onto the planning committee in December — and I’m so grateful to him for the opportunity to get more involved in the queer literary community.

Every month leading up to the festival, we’ve been hosting events to raise awareness and interest. These included readings, a live taping of the Trans Specific Partnership podcast, workshops on stereotypes or point of view, a discussion of kink and the Latinx community, a panel on how “The Future is Still Queer,” and more. I moderated “Our Queer Mother Earth” on June 9, which coincided with Capital Pride, and was a fascinating reading of environmental and climate change focused writing. Thanks to all who came out to these events — they were really fun to plan and attend!

Next month is already August, which means the festival is just around the corner! OutWrite is free and located at The DC Center for the LGBT Community. On Friday, August 3, there will be a kickoff event. On Saturday, August 4, there will be tons of panels, readings, and vendors all throughout the day. (My panel, “We Will Not Be Erased,” will be Saturday at 4 p.m. Panelists and details TBA). And finally, on Sunday, August 5, there will be writing workshops for you to practice your craft. Check back for the full schedule of events soon.

For the first time ever, we’re selling an OutWrite journal, so be on the lookout for it. I’ve been reading through wonderful submissions and can’t wait to share them with you.

We’ve been working hard to bring you a great festival this year, and we can’t wait to see you next month!
